2015 Summer Reading Overview

Summer Reading keeps your mind sharp and helps children avoid the “summer slide.” The summer months are a great time to expand your child's literary world, teach them to enjoy reading for pleasure, help sharpen school skills and bridge the gap between school years.  There are also many programs available to reward your reader this summer!
  • 2015 Scholastic Summer Challenge- A free online reading program for children. Join today and let’s set a new reading world record for summer 2015! (May 4 - Sept 4, 2015) Grand Prize: the schools with the most minutes read will win a visit from 
    Michael Northrop (top elementary school), and Varian Johnson (top middle school).  Go to:  www.scholastic.com/summer.

  • Barnes & Noble This summer reading program through Barnes & Noble gives your child the ability to earn a FREE book after reading 8 books and keeping track of them in a reading log.  Bring completed journals to Barnes & Noble stores between May 19th  and September 7th.


  • Sylvan Book Adventureis a FREE reading motivation program for children in grades K-8. Children create their own book lists from over 7,000 recommended titles, take multiple choice quizzes on the books they've read, and earn points and prizes for their literary successes.   Go to:  www.bookadventure.com to enjoy this fun, free way to motivate your child to read! 

  • TD Banks Summer Reading Program - When your child completes the TD Bank summer reading program, they'll get $10 free!  Kids will need to read 10 books and have a new or existing Young Savers account at a TD Bank to get this deal.  If your child is in grades K-5, participating is easy!  Valid June 1, 2015 through August 31, 2015, for children in Kindergarten through 5th grade. Offer valid in the United States only and must be redeemed by August 31, 2015.

  • Richland Public Library - Summer Reading Challenge: Children, teens, and adults can participate in the library's Summer Reading Challenge between May 30th and August 16, 2015.   Stop by any Richland County library location and tell a librarian you want to challenge yourself to read every day!  Return your completed reading records to any Richland Library location throughout the summer. Children will be presented with a reading reward to celebrate their success!
  • RCE READ-O Program - Complete the appropriate READ-O card (K-2 OR 3-5). Bring your completed READ-O card to school in August and turn in to the library. Students that complete the READ-O card over the summer will participate in a summer reading celebration! *Parents/Guardians must sign the READ-O card in order to participate.
