Welcome From the School Counselor

Welcome from the School Counselor!!!

I’d like to take this time to welcome you to a new school year. I have had the pleasure of working at Rice Creek Elementary as a School Counselor for several years. The Elementary years are wonderful in that students develop skills that will last a lifetime.
I am so excited about working with you and your child this school year. This year I will visit classrooms and teach guidance lessons that center around the 7 Habits. In addition, our lessons will focus on life skills such as responsibility, respect, fairness, caring and citizenship.
Beginning in September, there will also be group counseling sessions offered designed to address specific concerns throughout the year. If your child is recommended for a group I will contact you. I will also be doing individual counseling. Please contact me if you feel this service is appropriate for your child.
Please take advantage of the resources available. I look forward to working with you and helping in any way that I can. If you have questions please do not hesitate to contact me. I can be reached at 803-699- 2900 ext. 3005. You may also email me at kthompso@richland2.org.

Please visit my Counselor’s Corner Blog at rcecounselorscorner.blogspot.com for great tips and resources!

Rosters & Scheduling

IMPORTANT NOTE: At this time, your child's schedule appearing in Parent Portal has not been finalized. School administrators continue to work on class and teacher assignments. You will receive a schedule when you attend your child's back-to-school event, and administrators will be happy to answer any questions you may have at that time. Thank you for not calling the school with schedule questions as administrators, teachers and staff are busy working to get ready to welcome you to the new school year.

Medications

Attention All Parents:
Medications are not kept in the health room over the summer.  Please pick up all over-the-counter and prescription medications (inhalers, Epi-pens, other prescription medications) from the health room bFriday, June 3rd at 12 o'clock noon.  Any medications left after this time will be destroyed.

Parents of Rising Sixth Graders:
South Carolina Immunization laws require a tetanus/Tdap vaccine for all students prior to entering the seventh grade. Please schedule an appointment with your child’s physician to obtain the required vaccine. Once your child has been vaccinated, bring a copy of the updated shot record to your child’s school nurse.
• One (1) dose of Tetanus/Tdap vaccine (tetanus, diphtheria, and pertussis) administered on or after the 7th birthday will be required for all seventh graders.  It is strongly recommended that adolescents who have not yet received a dose of Tdap vaccine be immunized in advance of this requirement.

Purple Up!

Each April, America honors the courage and recognizes the sacrifice of over 1.7 million children in military families nationwide. The life of military children has always had its challenges, foremost among them being frequent relocations. Every time families move, children have to make new friends, get used to new schools, and find new clubs and teams to join. A lot of military children take these changes in stride and some even thrive on them, but it is hard - kids have to rebuild their world every time and find their place in it.
Month of the Military Child provides a powerful opportunity to raise awareness and build support to help these children meet the unique challenges they face! It is an opportunity to recognize military children and youth for their heroism, character, courage, sacrifices and continued resilience.
Please join us April 15th on PURPLE UP DAY as we wear purple to show our love and support of our military children!!!💜

Strawbridge "Journey" Photos

On Monday, January 25th, you will be receiving a special package of portraits from our photography partner, Strawbridge Studios.  They have designed a new program called "Journey", which is a multi-year product that a majority of students in 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 5th grades will be receiving.  All other students should receive a Fun Variety Pack if they had fall pictures taken this year.  This could be a perfect gift to purchase for family and friends.  This is also an additional fundraiser for the school.
Pictures will be distributed on Monday, January 25th. We need for either the package, or the money for the package, returned to the school by Friday, February 5th.   If you have any questions, call the school at 699-2900.
Thank you for your continued support.
